A shower floor can be beautiful, expensive, and still wrong. If the substrate falls the wrong way, water stays where feet stand, soap scum builds in corners, and the tile becomes expensive decoration over a bad piece of engineering.
Any foreman who has spent a week on site with a spirit level and a bucket of screed knows the hard truth: tile choice comes second. First, build the fall, then choose the tile that can live with it. A premium porcelain slab laid over a level shower base will fail every morning, because someone will end up pushing water toward the drain with a foot.
The floor must do the work
A shower floor is not a flat finish with a drain somewhere nearby. It needs a deliberate fall in the screed or substrate so water moves to the outlet without standing against the walls or sitting in the corners. Grout does not solve a bad base, nor does sealant. If the fall is wrong, the water tells the truth long before the client does.
In practical terms, a shower floor usually needs a fall of about 1:80 to 1:100, which works out to roughly 10 mm to 12.5 mm per metre. This number sounds minor until you try to build it on site. A shower with a central drain needs the floor to drop from four directions into one low point. A shower with a linear drain only needs one plane, which pairs much better with large-format tile.
Mosaic and central drain still make sense
A traditional central outlet and mosaic finish remain a sensible combination because the small tile format can follow the shape of an envelope fall without turning the whole base into a cutting exercise. Tiles around 25 x 25 mm or 50 x 50 mm sit comfortably on a floor that rises and falls in several directions. The grout joints absorb some of the geometry, and the floor can be shaped like an inverted shallow pyramid without demanding perfection from every tile edge.
This setup is still common for a reason. Standard PVC or basic stainless steel shower drains can sit around R100 to R500, and basic mosaic tiles in late 2023 could start around R150/m², with designer or glass mosaics pushing toward R500/m² at suppliers such as CTM and Johnson Tiles. It is a budget-aware system, but budget does not mean forgiving. The screed still has to be right.
The failure mode is obvious when it is done badly. A central drain with poor fall leaves tiny pockets of standing water on the low side, especially near the wall where the installer got lazy with the screed. The client sees the glossy new tile and thinks the problem is the grout stain, but the problem is the base.
Large tiles need a different drain
Large-format tiles and a central drain are a bad marriage unless the installer is unusually skilled and the shower is unusually simple. Once the tile size gets past 300 x 300 mm, and especially at 600 x 600 mm or 1200 x 600 mm, the floor stops being cooperative. The installer has to make awkward diagonal cuts, manage lippage at the drain, and somehow keep the finished surface looking intentional instead of improvised.
A linear drain changes the job. Set the drain along one edge, build a single-plane fall toward it, and the floor becomes far easier to tile cleanly. The screed no longer needs four separate slopes meeting at one point; it only needs one disciplined plane. This is why large-format porcelain and linear drains belong together.
The drain itself is not cheap. Good stainless steel linear drains or tile-insert systems from names like ACO, Geberit, and Franke were sitting around R1,500 to R5,000 plus in late 2023, with designer versions going beyond R8,000. The tile side of the equation is similarly elevated. Large-format porcelain and natural stone in the same period ranged from about R300/m² for entry-level porcelain to around R1,200/m² for premium material at places like Italtile and Tile Africa. None of that money helps if the shower base is shaped badly.
Screed is where the job is won or lost
The shower floor should be won in the screed, not rescued at the tiling stage. A common shower screed mix is 1:4 cement to river sand. For tighter work or improved bond, a latex additive such as TAL Bond or Weber Cemix Latex can be used. Shower floors are small, which makes errors easier to hide and harder to forgive.
For a central drain, the drain must be the lowest point and the screed has to rise evenly from all sides. That is a manual skill, not a decorative one. For a linear drain, the job is easier to read, but not easier to fake. The drain must sit flush with the finished level at the low edge, then the floor has to fall in a clean, straight line from the far side. A laser level, a long straight edge, and proper setting out are not optional.
If the base is thin at the edges, the shallowest point still needs enough body to remain stable. Around 25 mm to 30 mm at the thinnest point is a sensible working range for shower screed, assuming the build-up and waterproofing detail allow it. Try to cheat that, and the floor starts moving, cracking, or holding water in places it should not.
Why the wrong pairing costs more later
The cheap shower often looked expensive at the quote stage. Mosaic with a central drain can be cost-effective, but it brings more grout lines and more maintenance. A linear drain with large-format tile costs more upfront, but it usually gives cleaner drainage, fewer visible joints, and less daily grime trapped in the finish.
That trade-off is real, and contractors know it well. A client who wants the visual calm of a large slab floor in the shower usually needs to accept the drain upgrade and the more careful prep. A client who wants a plain, durable, budget-aware shower can still do well with mosaics and a central point drain, provided the screed is honest and the waterproofing is sound. What fails is the half-measure, where someone buys premium tile and then asks it to compensate for bad geometry.
The tile showroom does not tell you this, because tile is easier to sell than slope. The expensive tile gets photographed, and the fall gets ignored. Then the shower starts collecting puddles, and the owner discovers that a glossy finish does not make water move uphill.
What to specify before the order goes in
If the shower has a central drain, specify a mosaic tile format that can follow a four-way fall without ugly cuts.
If the shower uses large-format porcelain, specify a linear drain and a single-plane screed.
If the base is being screeded, specify the fall before the tile is chosen, not after.
If the installer is using a central outlet, insist on a proper envelope fall from all sides.
If the installer is using a linear drain, insist on a straight, uniform slope with no hollow spots.
If the tile is premium, specify the substrate to match, because the tile cannot rescue a bad floor.
If you want one rule to carry into every shower job, make it this: buy the drain and the floor together, then choose the tile. Anything else is just paying showroom money for a puddle.
